The Rise and Fall of the Crusader States

The Rise and Fall of the Crusader States

In June of 1099, the knights of the First Crusade arrived at the walls of Jerusalem. Only weeks later, Godfrey of Bouillon was appointed frst Christian secular leader and the basis for the Kingdom of Jerusalem was born. For two hundred years, Christian knights held onto land in the Middle East, and it will be this struggle for foundation and survival that will be the basis of this talk. It will examine the First Crusade and foundation of the Crusader states, as well as the relationship they had with their Muslim neighbours and their progenitors in Western Europe. Finally, it will detail their inevitable fall and absorption by the non-Christian states.
