Detailed Description

St Salvator’s Chapel Choir of the University of St Andrews joins forces with Scotland’s pre-professional early music ensemble, the Kellie Consort in a disc which simultaneously profiles the development of Lutheran church music in the 16th and 17th centuries and traces the liturgical sequence from Lent, via Passiontide, to Easter.

Marking the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation, the CD is directed by University Organist Tom Wilkinson and the Kellie Consort, featuring some of Scotland’s most talented young period instrument performers, is led and mentored by Richard Gwilt, Professor of Baroque Violin at the Musikhochschule in Cologne.

The repertoire includes Buxtehude’s profoundly beautiful settings of two Anulf of Leuven’s mystical meditations on Christ’s body and two cantatas by Buxtehude’s pupil Nicolaus Bruhns whose tragic death at the age of 31 robbed Northern Europe of one its most brilliant musicians.

The disc also includes organ works, both improvised and composed, recorded on the new Marc Garnier organ at the University of Birmingham.
