Good survey design is critical for obtaining reliable results in distance sampling surveys and meeting survey objectives. This workshop expands on the basic theory provided in our introductory workshops to demonstrate how our latest software can be used to generate optimal survey designs while respecting budgetary and logistical constraints. The workshop is designed to be interactive in format, with a chance for participants to discuss their own design problems.

Training in distance sampling design and analysis has been conducted in St Andrews for the past 25 years. We now offer these lectures, discussions and exercises in an interactive format, enabling participants to engage in lectures, conduct guided analyses of data sets and ask questions of the instructor. Distance sampling concepts discussed include: line transects, point transects, survey design, detection function models and estimation of uncertainty and its sources.
